February 15th, 2020, one year after the passing of Kofi Burbridge, Tedeschi Trucks Band took the stage at The Warner Theater in Washington, DC to honor their friend. The band opened with Amazing Grace, a fitting tribute, a song that lit the fuse to what was undoubtedly one of the finest musical performances ever witnessed. They paved a winding road of memories and emotion, complete with some subtle and some not so subtle nods to their former bandmate ;).

The band is once again slated for their 4-night, 2-weekend run at The Warner Theater this February. Their annual residency has become a highly sought-after experience among music lovers in the DMV area. Once you attend a Warner Theatre show, it’s not hard to see the community that has formed around this band. You can feel an electricity running through the crowd that’s always tied to the energy of the band, generating an incredibly unique musical experience.

Amazing Grace lead into Let Me Get By and fast-tracked that fuse from the beginning of the evening. The band exploded with full force and unleashed a wave of music upon the Warner, that let everyone know they were indeed going to light it up that evening. Just As Strange, Do I Look Worried and Hard Case followed. After a few songs it became evident that the band had been expanding on their hits and truly orchestrating arrangements of their songs, almost tailoring them for each show. After so much time together, it’s becoming that the wisdom and experience of each band member is not influencing a new direction for the dynamics of the band. Each band member contributed a more substantial, dynamic role in the show and that’s what truly made it great – “The more the merrier” was absolutely the case.

The first set concluded with Idle Wind, another tip of the cap to the end of the first set on February 16th, 2019, one day after Kofi’s passing. What was to follow was a treat rarely experienced by Tedeschi Trucks fans. After a brief intermission the band returned for an acoustic set that kicked off with Back Where I Started followed up by Forty-Four, I Am Yours, and Women Be Wise. The acoustic set featured Tyler Greenwell and J.J. Johnson on upright drum sets with Brandon Boone on upright bass. The set also featured Susan Tedeschi on Acoustic Guitar and Derek Trucks interchanging vintage acoustic and electric guitars.

The Evening drove on to what was without a doubt the climax of the event with a soul-jarring rendition of I Pity The Fool showcasing Susan Tedeschi singing at the top of her lungs, full-force, declaring “That was for Kofi.” afterwards. The room was pure electric, fans hugged and high-fived, the band paused and looked out over the crowd, and in that moment the room unified for Kofi and acknowledged his wonderful impact on each and every person the band had touched.
